'My Pikin' Syrup Makers Jailed

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, Friday convicted and sentenced to seven years imprisonment, two employees of Barewa Pharmaceutical Company Ltd, Adeyemo Abiodun and Ebele Eromosele.

The company and its employees were charged on an amended six-count charged of the production of a killer syrup, “my pikin.” an adulterated teething medicine which lead to the death of at least 84 children. After children started dying in 2008, the mixture was found to contain engine coolant. The judge also ordered that the company be closed and its assets forfeited to the state.

The paracetamol-based syrup, used for treating sore gums, was found to have been contaminated with diethylene glycol, used as an engine coolant.It caused the babies' kidneys to fail. Meanwhile, a constitutional lawyer, Fred Agbaje who frowned at the 7years imprisonment passed on the producers of the 'my pikin' teething mixture, has proposed a 25year imprisonment or live sentence for manufacturers of adulterated drugs in the country.

Lagosian to pay "MERRIMENT TAX" for every party you celebrate elaborately

Have you ever heard of merriment tax? Lagos State Government says residents of Lagos spend more than N1 billion on merriment and entertainment monthly.The state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, MrAdemorin Kuye, gave the figure at a news conference organised to mark Gov.Babatunde Fashola`s sixth year in office.

He said the figure was derived from a research recently conducted by the Ministry of Budgeting and Planning, which showed that the residents spent a lot of money on entertainment. Kuye lamented that the benefits of entertainment had not been fully tapped to boost revenue generation in terms of taxes. "There is merriment tax in the constitution, it is part of the rates local governments can collect. We have not fully utilised the benefit of the entertainment industry in this state. "Over N1 billion is spent monthly in Lagos state on entertainment, we have the records to confirm this and these people, how many of them pay tax?
